Job description:

1. Leadership and Strategic Direction

i. Develop and encourage a shared vision for the future directions, goals, and priorities of the

department, which is aligned to the broader mission, vision, and goals of the NMUC.

ii. Take a leadership role in developing the department’s strategic and operational.

iii. Planning and manage the department to achieve its strategic direction and goals.

iv. Maintain and enhance the academic standing of the department.

v. Implement quality assurance and improvement procedures with the goal of enhancing all aspects of the department’s activities.

vi. Foster the development of outstanding academic programmes, research, and research training in the department.

vii. Participate in the greater NMUC community, monitor, and evaluate the lecturers teaching, research, and community engagement activities in relation to comparable departments both within and outside the NMUC.

2. General Academic Management

i. Manage, administer, and foster excellence in the department’s teaching and professional activities.

ii. Implement department’s and NMUC’s policies and strategies.

iii. Establish and maintain communication with appropriate committees, boards, and networks internal and external.

iv. Represent the department’s interests, views, and needs in the broader context.

v. Initiate, maintain, and strengthen links between the department and other staff of NMUC.

vi. Take overall responsibility for relevant aspects of staff management in the department.

vii. Ensure that the department complies with the University’s policies and meets its legal and statutory obligations.

viii. Play a major role in the recruitment, selection, and induction of academic.

ix. Facilitate and promote effective communication and positive morale within the department.

x. Accountable for the performance management, mentoring, and staff development of academic, administrative and support staff.

xi. Manage staff grievances in an appropriate manner.

xii. Comply to relevant professional and industry bodies requirements.

xiii. Improve the level of engagement with industry, professions, employers, and the community.

xiv. Approve the Key Performance Indicator (KPI).

3. Financial and Infrastructure Management

i. Ensure that the department complies with all financial procedures and regulations.

ii. Prepare the department budget and monitor expenditure against allocations.

iii. Engage in appropriate budget forecasting, and staffing and infrastructure planning.

iv. Understand the department’s budgetary position, and the resource allocation procedures that impact on the school/department.

v. Manage, allocate and maintain all physical resources and infrastructure in the department.

vi. Maximise opportunities for raising funds from appropriate sources outside the department.

4. Legal Compliance

i. Adhere to legislation of NMUC, regulatory bodies, and professional bodies

5. Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the department complies with all Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) policies, procedures, and relevant legislation.
  • Promote and maintain a safe, healthy, and sustainable working and learning environment for staff and students.
  • Support and participate in the University’s OSH initiatives and programs to enhance workplace safety culture and awareness.
  • Oversee the implementation of OSH activities, including safety awareness, incident reporting, risk assessment, and emergency preparedness.
  • Liaise with the University’s Safety and Health Committee to ensure alignment with institutional safety objectives.
  • Ensure that all academic, laboratory, and office areas meet required safety and environmental standards.
  • Foster a proactive safety culture within the department through engagement and participation of staff and students.
